| The oral history of Hawaii before European contact is largely composed of the annals of royalty. Royalty were ranked in several classes. The Hawaiian royalty and the islands were recognized as an independent kingdom, on par with European counterparts in England and France. The kingdom was overthrown by American interests in 1893. |
