Conservation was observed in
fishing. Hawaiians worked different schools of fish in season. Deep
sea fishing brought them in touch with many native sharks, including
the tiger shark. Hawaiians believe that a spirit of the person could
be transfigured by the spirit world to live again as sharks, when
the shark had all the markings of that person's body. The human
body would assume the form of the shark, without the spirit living
permanently in the shark. Many sharks are aggressively hunted since
1920 as they pose a perceived danger to tourists, despite their
inherent sacredness. |
